Is Amcor Stock Halal?

How much of Amcor’s revenue comes from haram?

Amcor manufactures packaging products for various industries worldwide.

Amcor earns its revenue from the following segments:

  • Flexibles:

Includes revenue generated from supplying flexible and film packaging for the food and beverage, medical and pharmaceutical, fresh produce, snack food, personal care, and other industries

  • Rigid Packaging:

Includes revenue generated from supplying rigid plastic containers for a variety of predominantly beverage and food products, including carbonated soft drinks, water, juices, sports drinks, milk-based beverages, spirits and beer, sauces, dressings, spreads, personal care items, and plastic caps.

The contributions from each of Amcor’s revenue segments in their 2020 annual report were as follows:

An area of concern for Practical Islamic Finance is revenue generated from supplying packaging for alcoholic beverages (including beer and wine bottles).

Determining the exact share of revenue coming from supplying packaging for alcoholic beverages is extremely difficult since Amcor does not provide industry-specific breakdowns of its revenue.

However, given the variety of industries Amcor provides packaging for, Practical Islamic Finance estimates supplying packaging used for alcoholic beverages to be immaterial to Amcor’s business.

Practical Islamic Finance concludes:

Only a non-material portion of Amcor’s revenue comes from haram.
